Building on the work of Graham Foster and Toni L. Marasco's Exemplars, this session will explore how exemplars can be used effectively in the junior/senior high English classroom to develop reading skills. We will look in detail at a novel study unit for Barbara Kingsolver's The Bean Trees for ELA 30-1, however the strategies discussed could be utilized to teach close reading at any level of high school, or junior high school, English.
